Over €1m paid for Kerry injuries
BY MARY MURPHY
KERRY claimants were paid over €1.1 million by the Injuries Board in 2009, new figures have revealed.
The board, an independent government body which assesses the amount of compensation due for injuries sustained, made a total of 47 public liability awards over the 12 months, paying out compensation for a variety of incidents, from slips and trips to food poisoning.
Nationally the total value of public liability awards made by the Injuries Board during 2009 was a whopping €33 million.
Since 2004 all personal injury claims in Ireland, excluding medical negligence, must be processed through the board.
Last year females accounted for 72 per cent of all the awards and just over half of accidents under review took place in privately owned establishments.
Claims included:
* 25 per cent against retail/shopping outlets
* 19 per cent against hotels, pubs, nightclubs and restaurants
* 7 per cent against leisure facilities such as sports clubs and cinemas
Almost a quarter of public liability claims were made against local authorities.
Slips, trips and fall accounted to 65 per cent of personal injuries in a public place, being hit by a falling or flying object accounted for nine percent and being injured by machinery four per cent.
The average PL award during 2009 was €23,143, up marginally on the previous year.
The InjuriesBoard is a statutory body which provides independent assessment of personal injury compensation for victims of workplace, motor and public liability accidents.
The assessments are provided without the need for the majority of current litigation costs, such as solicitors, barristers and experts' fees, frequently associated with claims.
The board members assess the amount of compensation due to an injured party and reduce the amount of time it takes to finalise a compensation claim.
Under the court system it can take approximately three years to settle a claim but generally takes nine months to settle a personal injury claim via the Injuries Board.
