Kerry hosts free events to mark Heritage Week

THE rich beauty and diverse history of many parts of Kerry are assets that are greatly appreciated by many in the county and there will be an opportunity next month for those that haven’t seen enough of Kerry’s splendour to do just that.
National Heritage Week will run in the county from August 21-29 and a total of 21 events are due to take place throughout the county that are sure to attract plenty of interest.
The event guide can be picked up from Fáilte Ireland offices in Kerry and in all libraries.
There will be free entry to the Musaem Chorca Dhuibhne in Ballyferriter on August 22 and 29 and a guided heritage walk leaving from the Musaem Chorca Dhuibhne in Ballyferriter on August 28.
There will be a herb garden open day in An Paircin in Kilflynn on August 29 while in Cahirciveen on August 28 there will be a birdwatching walk with an archaelogical walk planned for the town the following day.
There will be free guided tours of Ross Castle in Killarney on August 22 and 29 and free guided tours of Listowel Castle from August 21-29. Free guided tours of Ardfert Cathedral will be held on the same week.
Derrynane House will offer guided tours on August 22 and 29 and a big attraction will be a greenwood stool making course in the Goose Island Workshop in Castlegregory from the 21-29 of August.
Also planned is a farm biodiversity tour at Gortbrack Organic Farm, Ballyseedy, Tralee on August 22 while whale and bird watching trips will take place all that week at Cuan Pier in Ventry.
There will be displays on famous islanders and geology walks to Bray Head, Valentia Island from August 21-29 and another event on the agenda will be a 150th anniversary celebration at St John’s Church in Valentia on August 29.
Also on the agenda will be an exhibition of inscriptions and burial types at Ardfert Cathedral from August 21-29 and an exhibition examining 50 years of fashion at the Rose of Tralee festival in the Ashe Memorial Hall, Tralee from August 21-29.
A fascinating attraction will be the whale watching sessions on Brandon Point and also Slea Head Shrine on August 22.
National Heritage Week is co-ordinated by the Heritage Council and most of the events are free.
