All hail King Puck
BY IAN HOWARD

THE excitement is mounting in Killorglin as the king and his loyal subjects get ready for the biggest and busiest three days and nights in the mid Kerry town’s calendar year.

Puck Fair is rapidly approaching and the 2010 programme for the age-old festival was officially launched last Thursday night in Killorglin by 2009 All-Ireland winning Kerry football captain Darran O’Sullivan.

A large crowd was in attendance for the launch and organising committee chairman, Declan Mangan, predicted a great feast of entertainment for three days and three nights on August 10, 11 and 12.

"This event has been going on for centuries and we are privileged to be in a position to help maintain this unique tradition and to pass it on to future generations," he said.

The entertainment at the launch was provided by local band Lonradh and Dr Fox’s Swing Band and the guest of honour was this year’s Queen of Puck, 12-year-old Kathlynn Coffey, from Dunmaniheen, Killorglin.

The line-up of entertainment and activities this year is hugely impressive with a number of major acts confirmed for the outdoor concerts, including The Walls, De Dannan and the Las Vegas Showband.

There will be a huge variety of street entertainment, from puppet shows to face-painters, to keep festival fans of all ages entertained.

There will be free music during the daytime, from an assortment of talented acts, as well as dancing, storytelling and music. The festival will also feature an art exhibition at which the work displayed, with a Puck Fair theme, will be created by local schoolchildren.

Evans’ Field will again be the venue for the popular horse fair on Gathering Day, August 10, and the festival will also play host to market stalls, street vendors and a fireworks display.

In all, Puck Fair 2010 is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever and with thousands of people set to descend on Killorglin during the three days and nights.
