Kerry talent hits LA

TALENTED young performers from Kerry have headed to the bright lights of Los Angeles to compete against the best in the business at the 2010 World Championships of Performing Arts.

The Kerry flagbearers are part of a 54-member Irish team that will partake in two weeks of intense competition in Hollywood.

The Kerry delegation ranges in age from six to 31 and they will be strutting their stuff in an big event which is widely regarded as the Olympics of performing arts.

Many of the Irish team are recognised instantly and Team Ireland includes professional actor and entertainer Johnny Ward who has starred in Raw and Prosperty and three Fair City actors including Niamh Quirke (13) who plays Rachel Brennan; Susie Power (6) who plays Eleanor Daly and Gary Nolan (18) who plays troublesome teen Philip.

Also attending this year is Susan Ward had a starring role with Anne Hathaway in Ella Enchanted and Niamh Glynn who is the face of the current Meteor marketing campaign.

There will be over 65 countries taking part in the world championships this year and the event will also include workshops and seminars with some of LA’s top agents, managers and record companies.

Competitions will be held over the two weeks and each competitor will also have the chance to meet agents and record companies on a one-to-one basis.

The competitions will be adjudicated by worldwide agents and casting directors, record label executives, top choreographers and other showbiz industry officials.

Not only will the members of Team Ireland have the opportunity to compete in the competition but they could also end up being snapped up for a Hollywood film or signing a record label.

They will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Tralee’s Darragh Kelliher (18) who won the title of senior world champion in acting in 2009 and was immediately snapped up by Infinity Management in Los Angeles.

Darragh was much sought after by many of the agents and managers at last year’s event but he returned to Ireland to finish his Leaving Certificate and is now moving to Hollywood after being signed by Infinity.

Darragh will be a guest presenter at this year’s competition.
