Priest enjoys a silver lining

AFTER 25 years of dedicated service, a priest with strong Kerry connections enjoyed a real silver lining as he joined family and friends for a special jubilee mass in Cork.

Fr John Fitzgerald may have been born in Chicago but is very much an adopted son of Castleisland and he was one of a group of nine Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC) priests who celebrated anniversaries of their ordinations.

The nine priests were marking diamond, golden, ruby and silver jubilees and between them they have devoted an astonishing 400 years to their vocations, with many of them serving in the foreign missions in Africa and South America.

For Fr Fitzgerald the occasion marked his silver jubilee and he could think of no better way of spending the day than with family and friends at a concelebrated Mass at the MSC community on Western Road in Cork.

For the past quarter of a century Fr Fitzgerald’s abilities have flourished as is evident from the diverse and varied ministries he has been involved in.

The popular priest has been involved in the parish mission team travelling the country preaching parish missions and is the MSC Director of Vocations in Ireland.

On top of all his other diverse duties, the Castleisland-reared cleric is also currently leader of the community in Cork as well as being parish priest and for the past number of years he has been a member of the leadership team of the provincial council.

The MSC Provincial, Fr Pat Courtney – a Kerry man from the parish of Kilcummin – referred at the celebrations to the many young men from Kerry who entered the MSC priesthood over the years and also the large number of people who continue to support the missions in developing countries.

"The mission of our founder was to make known the love of the heart of Christ to people everywhere," Fr Courtney said.

"We know this love ourselves and we strive to enable people to experience it in their lives," he added.

Encouraging young Kerry men to think about the MSC missionary way of life, Fr Courtney urged them to reflect on any calling and to contact Fr John Fitzgerald in Cork to discuss the matter.
