Lassa Extreme earns his derby ticket after win
By Murt Murphy
IT was another busy night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Tralee, on Friday as numbers were again swelled by visitors who in the absence of the sun and seaside have resorted to the dogs instead.
It was a night of quick times and that included the Ladbrokes Greyhound derby trial stake final, with the winner receiving free entry to the Irish Derby that will begin at Shelbourne Park on August 5.
Three One Three was sent to traps the 2/1 favourite to deliver for the Inside-The-Door-Syndicate in the derby trial stake final but Killorane Boy who was well drawn in two and Lassa Extreme also had their supporters at 5/2 in what looked an open enough contest.
Once again the final was decided on the break with Lassa Extreme displaying the best early pace as Three One Three was also well away on his inside.
Killorane Boy was in behind and was crowded at the opening bend as he headed for the rails and that was that.
Meanwhile up front, it was quickly turning into a three-dog battle for supremacy, as Lassa Extreme led down the back from Three One Three and the improving Mileheight Crash, who is also owned by Michael Costello.
The two kennel companions were now locked in combat as the they headed for the judge and at one stage, it appeared that Lassa Extreme had been headed by Mileheight Crash.
However, Lassa Extreme proved the stronger finisher, coming again and staying on strongly to win by a length and half from Mileheight Crash and Three One Three, in a quick 29.90.
The winner is jointly owned by Michael Costello and Frank O’Donnell. He will now be aimed at the derby in early August.
The winner of this trial stake in the past has always acquitted themselves well and Lassa Extreme should prove no different.
Meanwhile, the Jane Bradley-trained Ar Kid was well-fancied along with Don’s Fantasy in an open race on the card while there was also interest in Boherbee Flash who looked ideally drawn on the rails but was up in class.
The race was over almost before it started when Ar Kid exploded from traps. Once he got clear at the opening bend, he was never going to be caught as Enercon and O’Leary’s Pride gave chase but it was all in vain.
Ar Kid was simply motoring well clear out in front and because he was travelling so well, there was never any chance that anything would come from behind.
Ar Kid cruised down the home straight and had four and half lengths to spare over the running on O’Leary’s Pride in a magnificent 28.67 for Jane Bradley from Lisselton and he has a good strike rate – seven wins from 16 starts.
Elsewhere, Ballingarry curate Fr Keating made a successful raid with two runners on Friday night and completed a fifth and last race double with Lasco Legend and Lasco Lass.
Lone Accord was sent off the favourite from trap one over the sprint distance but missed his break, and it was Lasco Legend from five who was quickly away.
Taking advantage of trouble at the opening bend, he took it up to lead the rest of the way home, winning by two and half lengths, in 17.99 for the West Limerick priest at odds of 3/1.
Fairest Honcho came in as a reserve in this four-runner final race and was a warm 1/2 favourite to deliver but just failed to get up after meeting trouble in running.
Lasco Lass challenged long-time leader Bridge Kestrel at the final bend and got up in the shadow of the post to win by a short head and a head from Bridge Kestrel and Fairest Honcho in 29.45 to send Fr John Keating home with a nice double.
