It’s the Jack of trumps
BY IAN HOWARD
A TALENTED young Kerry performer has landed a dream role in a musical that is set to take Cork Opera House by storm next month.
Teenager Jack Healy, who hails from Beaufort, is to play the lead role of Toby in Stephen Sondheim’s musical-thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which will run from Thursday, August 5 until Sunday, August 8.
The actor originally due to play the role fell ill and it was to Jack that musical director John O’Brien turned.
O’Brien was aware of the rave reviews Jack had received for his performances to date with starring roles in musicals such as The Wiz in Killarney.
Jack’s talent has even been acknowledged by the great and good of the entertainment business with the Beaufort actor and singer recently performing with Rebecca Storm.
Sweeney Todd is a musical that concerns the story of a hairdresser who loses everything to a corrupt judge. A recent movie version was released starring Johnny Depp and the show is sure to prove popular with audiences, particularly with the quality of the cast.
Alongside Jack, there is Michael Sands of Les Miserables, Michael Grennell of Michael Collins: The Musical and Deirdre Bashford as the insane Mrs Lovett.
The musical is a Cork Operatic Society production and the cast and crew have been rehearsing tirelessly for the last six months.
Jack is also preparing for the musical Johnny Patterson, the story of Ireland’s original singing clown, in which he plays the role of Daniel Murphy, Johnny’s best friend. It will be staged in Killorglin and also stars last year’s Kerry Rose Karen McGillycuddy.
