Old convent gets new life

THE historic Moyderwell Convent in Tralee is to be given a whole new lease of life after the go-ahead was received this week for major refurbishment work on the building which is part of the Tobar Naofa housing development.
During a visit to the Mitchels-Boherbee Regeneration Project in Tralee on Friday, Minister for Housing and Local Services, Michael Finneran, gave the green light for the refurbishment project which is the next phase in Tralee Town Council’s regeneration plan.
The work at the convent is an integral part of the overall development at Tobar Naofa, which is a high-quality, secure housing complex for the elderly, comprising of 42 apartments. It was developed as part of phase one of the community regeneration project.
"The refurbishment of the convent is a significant objective in the regeneration plan and it also demonstrates the government’s ongoing commitment to the regeneration project in Tralee," said Tralee town manager Michael McMahon.
As part of the work on the convent, the ground floor will be modified to allow for the creation of new HSE run day-care centre which will replace the existing daycare facility occupying a section of the St Patrick’s Bungalows complex.
The ground floor unit will also house a community facility for the residents of Tobar Naofa and the first floor of the building will retain its residential use and will comprise of eight additional apartments.
This announcement follows on foot of departmental approval for the construction of 18 residential units at Mitchels Crescent.
Other projects completed this year under the regeneration project include the demolition of 81 houses at Mitchels Crescent, the development of community allotments at Moyderwell and the conversion of fibe units at the St Patrick Bungalows complex to facilitate the Mitchels Youth Project and an international resource centre for new communities.
