Radio signal causes big switch-off

RADIO listeners in Kerry have been experiencing persistent problems when attempting to tune into their favourite programmes because of severe difficulties with the quality of the signal being received in the county.

Technical difficulties have resulted in no signal being received for any of the RTÉ stations, Today fm or Newstalk for prolonged periods in recent weeks.

RTÉ has confirmed that problems started on July 5 with no signal available at occasions and the signal being of poor quality on other times.

The main reason for the poor signal is weather damage caused to the main transmission site in Mullaghanish, just outside Ballyvourney.

RTÉ has confirmed that the signal stoppages were planned due to structural work ongoing at the transmission site.

The national broadcaster said another system is causing interference with the RTÉ transmission site at Portmagee in south Kerry.

The station’s technical team has been unable to locate the source of the interference but believe it could be a low power transmit system operating without a licence, a CCTV system or a wireless home internet device.

RTE have said it will locate the interfering signal and work is already underway to restore the site at Mullaghanish to its full capacity.
