Warrior proves Best in the big final
By Murt Murphy

DESPITE the constant downpour, there was a big crowd at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Tralee, on Friday night for the 3 Mobile sweepstake final as well as the two semi-finals of the Ladbrokes Derby trial stake, with the winner of the final receiving free entry into the derby proper.

Confident Nestor was many peoples’ confident choice to take all the beating in the 3 Mobile Sweepstake 570 yards final following his semi-final win but things just did not work out as planned.

The aptly named Undertheweather made the early running from trap six but was crowded at the opening bend. This allowed Confident Nestor to take it up on the rails, and lead at the second bend and down the back.

However, Dinard Warrior began to stay on strongly on the outside and was challenging at the second last bend.

He was in front by the final bend and stayed on strongly down the finishing straight to hold off the persistent challenge of the running on Confident Nestor, winning by a length and half in 31.75.

The winner is owned by Darragh Dineen from Ardfert and trained by recently retired Ardfert footballer Jonathon Best, who is enjoying a great run at the moment.

The first semi-final of the Ladbrokes Greyhound derby trial stake saw the class of Three One Three. who was sent off at 6/4. really prove that quality always comes to the top.

He broke smartly from trap four and was never sighted after making it around the opening bend in front.

His principal rival Mileheight Crash was slowly away but ran on while Clohur Blue did show early pace but just could not match the pace of the winner.

Three One Three was away and gone. and staying every yard of the 550 yards, he cruised to a six and half length win from Mileheight Crash and Ballyfidora One in 30.41. But the track was at least .30 slow due the persistent rain that fell all day.

The winner is owned by a group of local lads that sit inside the door at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium and he is trained by Liam Dowling.

The second semi-final saw an American import owned by Fr Bryan Dalton from Florida make his Tralee debut but whether it was the un-Florida like weather, Kiowa Myth was slowly into his stride. As a result, he was baulked at the opening bend and crowded at the second, so never really got in a blow for top trainer Maurice O’Connor.

Instead, it was Sanantone Jack that led around the opening two bends but he was grabbed by Killorane Boy and Lassa Extreme down the back. The race was a match between the front two.

Killorane Boy, who loves the rails, was in front around the final two bends but Lassa Extreme was not going down without a fight.

The two battled all the way down the home straight, with Killorane Boy hanging on by a length to win by a length in 30.34, again remember the surface was rated slow.

The winner is owned by Thomas and Patrick Stack from Ardfert and trained by Padraig Regan who is starting to churn out the winners again.

There were also three semi-finals of the Camp United Buster Sweepstake over 570 yards run off.

Herself was an impressive winner of the opening semi, leading all the way from the opening bend and coming home three and half lengths clear of the staying on Conkon in 31.61 for owner Siobhan Dowling from Castlegregory and trainer Ray Fleming.

The second semi-final was won by Took The Okee who took it up at the opening bend and always held the reserve General Dogsbody who did not enjoy a clear passage. Took The Okee stayed on to win his fourth race by a length and three quarters in 31.84 for Jim O’Donnell from the Spa, Tralee.

There was carnage in the third semi-final when Ted Tashadelek seem to slip. He took out everything outside him at the opening bend, which allowed the reserve Kielduff Merc to take full advantage on the rails.

He was handed the race on a plate, winning as he liked by six and half lengths for Denis Shanahan from Kielduff in 32.20.

Meanwhile, the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium Supporters Club will hold its first lotto draw this Tuesday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Tralee, at 9pm. All are welcome to attend.
