Dairy market must be better managed

AN IFA official has called on the EU Commission to recognise the need for continued dairy market management.

Commenting on the final report of the high level group on milk, IFA National Dairy Committee Chairman, Kevin Kiersey, said the EU Commission must recognise the need for continued market management and supports, including export supports, before and after 2013 to secure sustainable milk supplies from viable family dairy farms in Ireland and all around Europe.

"Few of the high level group recommendations will do much to secure the income of dairy farmers, however the debate which took place in the group has clearly demonstrated the importance and acceptance by most member states of the need for continued market management and supports," Mr Kiersey said.

"EU Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Ciolos stated in March that he would come forward with legislative proposals by year end. He must now come forward with concrete commitments to providing market management measures including strategic stock management, and export-related supports," he continued.

"Such measures can be operated much more nimbly than the pre-mid term review systems, and can be cost effective for the EU, while helping secure the viability of dairy farm families in Ireland and all around Europe before and after 2013," Mr Kiersey remarked.
