Dara marking the big return of summer time
FORMER Kerry footballer and broadcaster Dara Ó Cinnéide heralded the return of the summer this month on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.
Dara’s summer sports programme, Reacaireacht an Tráthnóna, marked the start of the new summer schedule on the station.
The programme includes live match commentary, reports, interviews and previews of matches and is broadcast on Saturday evenings from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm.
Also of Kerry interest in the new line up is Binneas Béil, a two-hour afternoon music programme that can be heard from Monday to Friday at 2pm, presented on alternate weeks from the Raidió na Gaeltachta studios in Kerry, Galway and Donegal.
Singer and musician Áine Uí Laoithe will be presenting the programme when it is on its Kerry rotation and the next time she will be stepping into the Binneas Béil chai on July 19.
Listeners interested in the singing tradition will have a second chance to hear the series Údar an Amhráin over the summer where guest singers discuss the background and provenance of songs.
Some of the Munster singers who will feature in the programme will include Páidí Mhárthain MacGerailt, Eilís Ní Chinnéide, Eoiní Maidhcí Ó Súilleabháin and Johnny Lehane. Údar an Amhráin can be heard on Mondays at 1.30 pm.
Trad music fans can tune in to singer Eilín Ní Chearna’s summer music programme Cuisle an Cheoil on Sundays at 1.15pm, and Peadar Ó Riada’s music programme Cuireadh chun Ceoil finds a new home on Friday nights at 7pm for the summer months.
