Celtic treat awaits Kerry music fans

CELTIC folk and jazz pioneers Carmina will make a welcome return to the county later this month with a total of four Kerry dates pencilled in for their summer tour.

Carmina comprises Pippa Marland on vocals, saxophones and whistles and Rob King on guitar, mandola and bodhrán and they tour with their band Geoff Castle piano/synth, Diarmuid Moynihan on pipes/whistles and Brian Morrissey on banjo, Well known on the traditional music scene, Carmina have a legion of fans in Kerry and have released five hugely successful albums to date.

The duo has also toured worldwide gaining themselves thousands of new fans across the globe and appearing at festivals from Europe to Australia.

Carmina began in Ireland and such is their affinity with the county that they have done over 30 tours here, including countless festivals.

Their new album, My Crescent City, is their second collaboration with Irish legend Dónal Lunny, who produced and guests on the recording.

Regarded as a perfect album of its genre, it was hailed as a masterpiece by BBC Celtic Heartbeat and voted album of the week on RTE Radio 1.

This year’s tour is centred around Kenmare where they have been invited to perform at the final night of the Munster Fleadh Cheoil Festival concerts on Sunday, July 18.

Carmina’s first stop off is next Tuesday, July 13, at The Blasket Inn, Tralee followed by a date in St James’s Church in Dingle on Wednesday, July 14 where they will be joined by celebrated uilleann piper Eoin Duignan.

On Thursday the performances head across the border to The School House Theatre in Charleville before returning to Kerry on Friday, July 16 for a date at Tech Amergin Arts Centre in Waterville.

Carmina play Bantry House on July 17 before their big date at Kenmare Arts Centre on Sunday, July 18 for the Munster Fleadh. The final date of the Irish summer tour is Monday, July 19 at the Youghal Arts Centre.
