Sigerson heartbreak for Kerry stars
BY FINTAN O’TOOLE

THERE may have been joy for Kerry in IT Tralee’s Trench Cup success, but elsewhere in Leixlip GAA club on Saturday afternoon there was disappointment for the Kerry players involved in the Sigerson Cup final as UCC lost out to DCU by 1-11 to 0-10.

After Friday’s semi-final victory against Athlone IT by 1-15 to 0-7, hopes were high that UCC could enjoy success in the final.

UCC had been hugely impressive in that last four defeat of Athlone IT with four Kerry players in their starting line-up.

Tarbert’s Shane Enright started at left corner-back, St Pats Blennerville’s Adrian Greaney played at centreback, while Dr Crokes duo John Buckley and Daithí Casey began at midfield and left half-forward respectively.

Buckley and Casey once again impacted in a scoring sense for UCC shooting two points apiece, while Enright also notably figured in that department.

Athlone IT’s ploy of playing a third midfielder resulted in Enright operating around the middle and that enabled him to get forward to fire in a crucial goal before half-time.

In Saturday’s decider, UCC began with the same team resulting in the quartet of Enright, Greaney, Buckley and Casey all retaining their places in the starting line-up.

However, it was DCU who started the stronger force to lead 0-4 to 0-0 after the first quarter.

UCC did rally before the break and a fine point by Casey left them 0-6 to 0-3 adrift at the interval. But DCU had the better of the exchanges again at the start of the second-half and were 1-8 to 0-5 in front by the 41st minute.

UCC mounted a spirited revival and they enjoyed a purple patch in front of goal that featured a wonderful long-range point by Casey.

Laune Rangers Peter Crowley also made a big impression when introduced to the UCC rearguard at half-time and with nine minutes remaining, UCC were only 1-9 to 0-9 behind.

But that was as close as UCC managed to get on the scoreboard and it was DCU who held out for a deserved victory.

There were two other Kerry players on the UCC squad in Na Gaeil’s Mike Griffin and St Pats Blennerville’s David O’Callaghan, who unfortunately was sidelined for the finals weekend through suspension.

Meanwhile, the other Kerry players involved in the weekend’s third-level football finals also failed to achieve success.

Aidan Walsh, from St Mary’s Cahirciveen, came on as a second-half substitute for the hosts NUI Maynooth attack in their semi-final against DCU on Friday afternoon but they suffered a 1-12 to 1-6 defeat.

In the Trench Cup semifinal, Napier University of Edinburgh lost out against Trinity College on Friday afternoon by 1-12 to 1-6 with Skellig Rangers’ Colin O’Sullivan and Beaufort’s Thomas O’Hagan both involved with the Napier squad.
