Jack wants that winning feeling
BY KIERAN McCARTHY

THE National League starts now for Kerry. Having lost their opening two league games against Dublin and Cork, Jack O’Connor wants his charges to return to winning ways at home to Derry in Tralee this Sunday.

But the Kerry boss is expecting a tough game against the side that the Kingdom defeated in last year’s league final in Croke Park.

"Winning is a habit and losing can also become a habit so we want to get back to winning ways as fast as we can," the Kerry boss told The Kingdom on Monday evening.

"We would be hoping now that we could pick it up against Derry but they are a fine side. They beat Tyrone in the first round this year so that’s an indication of where they are at.

"If you look at our game against them last year, there was nothing between the teams up in Bellaghy and we just came out with a few points to spare.

"We are looking to improve. We have trained well in the three weeks since the Cork game and hopefully that will show in our performance."

Sunday’s game will also mark the first match that Kerry will have played since Darragh Ó Sé’s retirement, and O’Connor stated that there is a chance now for some players to step up and make a name for themselves.

"There is an interesting challenge there for some of the younger lads to see if they can step up to the mark now that Darragh has retired," O’Connor said.

"We are looking for new players to come through now and take up the mantle that’s been left by Darragh.

"There are spots up for grab now and it’s up to the players to make that step. There’s a big year ahead for a few players and it’s a good opportunity for them in many ways."

In the three weeks since the league loss away to Cork, O’Connor has welcomed back many regular faces to the Kerry set-up, which will strengthen his hand ahead of a hectic four weeks of action.

"We are slowly but surely getting fellas back," O’Connor said.

"We will need everyone for the next few weeks as we have four games in a row now. That’s going to take its toll of fellas so we need a big panel in case we pick up any injuries.

"Bryan Sheehan was back training last week and he played for St Marys over the weekend so he is back in the frame again.

"Tom O’Sullivan and Marc Ó Sé are back in training for the last week. Anthony Maher is training as well after his injury, and Aidan O’Shea is back in training too.

"Colm Cooper and Darran O’Sullivan are in there too and whatever lads are training will be in contention to play against Derry on Sunday," O’Connor said.
