Rathmore too good for Fossa
BY PAT O’BRIEN
Rathmore 2-17 Fossa 0-14 THE difference in standard between Division One and Division Four of the county league was evident in Fossa on Sunday afternoon when Rathmore ran out nine points winners over Fossa in round two of the East Kerry Superleague.
Rathmore could afford to field without their county stars and went into an early three-point lead courtesy of Damien Casey, Donal Casey and industrious wing forward Paul Murphy before Fossa’s Mick O’Neill opened the home side’s account in the fourth minute.
Wing back Brendan O’Keeffe registered Rathmore’s fourth point before having to retire early with a serious shoulder injury.
In one of Fossa’s better moves, centre back Frank McCarthy powered forward to register a second Fossa point.
Rathmore wing back James O’Sullivan and Fossa’s Fintan Coffey swapped points to leave the score at 0-5 to 0-3 for the visitors after 15 minutes.
Then Rathmore stepped up their play, producing fast, quick-passing movements that opened up the Fossa defence. In the next six minutes they registered 2-4 to leave Fossa chasing the game.
As the Rathmore half back line pressed forward, Daniel O’Sullivan and James O’Sullivan worked the ball to John Buckley at the edge of the square and he left Eamon Sheehy no chance in the Fossa goal.
Within two minutes, Buckley sent an inch-perfect pass to Michael O’Riordan who evaded full back Anthony Wharton for Rathmore’s second goal. That goal put the score at 2-9 to 0-3.
Fintan Coffey and Mark Dennehy replied with Fossa points but it was the visitors who finished strongest with points from Michael O’Riordan and full forward Donal O’Sullivan (0-2) – the latter’s final score being a brilliant individual effort as he soloed over 40 metres through the Fossa defence.
At half time, Rathmore led 2-12 to 0-5.
There was a more competitive and co-ordinated edge to the Fossa play in the second half as they threw down a challenge to Rathmore.
Midfielders Conor O’Keeffe and Lorcan Daly got the upper hand at midfield and led by example, shooting two points within two minutes.
Centre forward Fintan Coffey made it 0-8 for Fossa but had to retire injured.
Further points from substitute Killian Lynch and John Falvey brought the score to 2-12 to 0-10 after 10 minutes of the half.
However, the Fossa defence conceded a number of close-in frees as Rathmore tried to get on the scoreboard and pointed frees from Michael O’Riordan (0-2) and Donal O’Sullivan maintained Rathmore’s grip on proceedings.
Substitute Mikie Cronin, Donald O’Sullivan (0-2) and John Falvey brought the Fossa score to 0-14.
But Rathmore had done enough in that devastating six minutes in the first half to see them take the honours and the league points on a final score of 2-17 to 014.
Fossa will be disappointed to lose at home but can take pride in their second half performance while Rathmore’s corner forward Michael O’Riordan, with 16, gave an outstanding display.
