Plea for aid for pig staff
KERRY TD Martin Ferris has called for compensation for workers affected by the pig meat scare. The Sinn Féin spokesperson on agriculture urged the government to ensure that workers who were temporarily laid off as part of the scare over contaminated pig meat are given compensation out of the fund made available to the processors. Deputy Ferris was speaking during a debate on the aftermath of the crisis in the Dáil. "Given that €180 million has been set aside for the compensation it is only right that the workers involved should also be reimbursed for loss of earnings," he said.
"I estimate that this would account for less than 10 per cent of the monies promised. "There is surely no excuse then for failing to make up loss of earnings and this must be insisted upon before the money comes on stream," he added. Meanwhile, Tralee local elections candidate Arthur Spring travelled to Brussels to press for support for Kerry farmers who are suffering as a result of the pigmeat crisis. He met with Labour MEP Proinsias De Rossa to discuss how to move forward in the industry as well as single farm payment negotiations.
